from this point forward this will be a purely personal blog. i'll be linking to globe projects and things i've been working on (in fact one comes out tomorrow!) but i just can't put them here. some past content had to go too. hopefully this will motivate me to do some more personal work to share.
i'll still promote the work of people i really admire though. like my good friend ross taylor.
this photo just broke my heart.
and of course, mr. rubenstein and his little family history he's been posting.
this letter touched my heart.

woah

circa 1997,1998
vienna, austria
i just had a 2 hour phone conversation with an old high school friend i haven't seen in ages. he found me online and the conversation just started from there.
it's funny b/c his messsage to me described a photo i took of him when we both used to skateboard, which he still had, and sent to me by e-mail b/c i just couldn't remember it. mind you, this was before i knew anything about photography. in fact, i think this photo was taken with a disposable camera. probably grainy 800iso film. it's so odd, b/c i don't even remember taking this photo. but i remember that day, the details of what we did, where we went. the shape of the roof we were skating on were like little banks, back to back - the reason we chose to skate there.
it was so nostalgic reminiscing on all our old high school memories. how we met, our senior trip, old teachers and friends, and of course skateboarding all around town.

halloween...kinda
a last minute invite to a halloween party in concord, nh.
we found a yellow wall...

someone's strobe went off...

a doll was hit on by a superhero...

there was a fire...

and a moon...

preston and i were twins...(it was pretty last minute)

80

please keep taking me away...
this had me listening to kerplunk, belting out lyrics from my youth, on the way to an assignment today. it brought back a lot of memories...in particular, buenos aires, skateboarding, and churros.

props to kg & elyse
i'm feeling a bit more plugged in after transferring my rss feed bookmarks over to my work computer.
i get a lot of inspiration and food for thought from kevin german and elyse butler whenever they post their thoughts and images. their coverage of the devastation in california is no exception. if you're not subscribed, i recommend you do.

the city seen
one thing i miss about working at a smaller paper is being able to see your co-workers daily. here, you could go for weeks, and probably months without seeing someone, and i was just talking about that with suzanne kreiter, who i felt like i hadn't seen in ages. check out her column she's been doing for the past two years, the city seen. it won the 2007 ASNE Award for Community Service Photojournalism. some of my most favorite pictures hanging in the globe are from this column. she reminds me a lot of shana sureck at the hartford courant. i'd love to pick both their brains about what i see as community journalism at it's best.

final touches
i still very much consider chris tyree my mentor. he taught me a lot about photography and compassionate storytelling. recently he lost his father-in-law and he sent me a link to a story he published at the pilot. just an example of how he opens his heart, documenting, what for some is the most difficult thing of all - your own family.

m&m
so...i'm so late on this it's not even funny.
but just wanted to congratulate matt and melissa on their newborn madelyn avery eich. their video on soul of athens will make you feel soft and squishy inside...or will make rubenstein throw up in his mouth a litttle.
mr. deveraux was so kind to share a pic on his blog.
also wanted give a shout out to dina rudick who made some really compelling videos on subjects that were very difficult to visually show where i think video really helped to tell their stories.
an adoptive parent
a father's dilemma
an immigrant's decision
busier than before, if that was even at all possible, but at almost all unpacked! i've got a lot of advance stuff i can't really share, but, a few images that were published for daily work...
